Yes, it's freezing outside. Nobody is thinking about doing outdoor portraits, especially senior pictures. Here's why you should . . . .
If you have a graduating senior who plays spring sports this is a good time to scope out a local photographer so you can plan for getting photos of your son or daughter in action (and in uniform). Good photographers are typically busy professionals, so that the sooner you make these decisions the better you can be prepared for good weather.
Even if you have a junior now, this is a great time to get ahead of the game and plan summer photo sessions. Before you know it, they will have a busy fall season and you'll be trying to find open dates to get that yearbook photo done. Between classes, college trips, sports games and practices, etc., you don't want to end up making snap decisions. You and your child will have to live with that yearbook photo for a really long time (trust me, my 50th high school reunion was last year!).
A last thing to keep in mind is that your son or daughter likely won't care about getting photos done nearly as much as you do. Getting them involved in talking to the photographer, or looking at their work online, will help get their buy in to the process. I always ask for a consultation in person or by Zoom with the senior and parent(s) to find out what their favorite things are including hobbies and sports. I can then share ideas before any session happens, that results in better cooperation.
I've been taking photos since I was 10 years old, raised three kids and two granddaughters who had me taking high school photos for them and their friends, and I've been a full-time professional studio photographer since 2013. Call or visit my website at altimagery.com to set up a free consultation.
